Programme outline for Wednesday

Wednesday 20 March
MORNING
Medium and large scale wood energy projects

This first session will dealt with recent and upcoming technologies for the conversion of biomass into other forms of energy, for medium and large scale projects. Different case studies suggested solutions to answer growing needs in terms of energy efficiency, quality of wood fuel, or even type of energy vector sought (heat, electricity, methane...). Technologies presented here thus covered cogeneration, gasification and wood methanation.

Leading on, medium and large-scale district heating networks have been discussed. An overview of the French context of district heating networks and the share of wood energy has been presented, together with its medium term perspectives and the main advantages wood energy offer regards other incumbent energy sources. The specific role of pellet boilers for medium scale projects and as an alternative to fossil fuel backups for larger wood chip boilers have been presented. The 2,5MW "Chantrerie” boiler house project in Nantes provided an interesting case study as an example of a public-private partnership.

Wednesday 20 March
AFTERNOON
Small-scale wood energy projects

Mini-heating networks, whether they supply urban eco-districts or rural areas, are a privileged target for wood heating. Their organisational and technical aspects have been discussed in this session.

An overview of the different possible organisation structures have been presented and also complimented with real examples, illustrating for example the case of cooperative structures ("SCIC") and local energy agencies, which allow smaller structures to reach the human & financial critical mass needed to put together such projets. Current and upcoming technical innovations in terms of design and operation of mini-networks have also been presented.

Following on, mini and micro-cogeneration from wood have been presented with an overview of current technologies (gasification, rankine cycle, stirling engine...) and a status report of the market in France and other European countries. Strengths and possible barriers have then be highlighted during a dedicated round table discussion.

Programme outline for Thursday

Thursday 21 March
MORNING
Plenary session Biogas & Wood Energy - What role for Biogas and Wood Energy in the Energy Transition ?

This high-level session aimed at advancing our understanding of the role biogas and wood energy can play in the upcoming energy transition. The ambition was also to create a discussion platform for this hot topic, in the context of the French national debate on the energy transition.

A quantitative review of these two sectors has been presented, as well as an analysis of the public strategy and support schemes at the national and regional levels. Then the role of territories and local authorities has been highlighted with the presentation of the "Positive Energy Territories" initiative in France, and accounts from representatives of pioneering territories in France and Germany. Finally, long term perspectives for synergies of bioenergies between them and with other renewable energy technologies have been presented by the French think-tank négaWatt, illustrating the crucial role of these two sectors (biogas and wood energy) in the energy transition.

Thursday 21 March
AFTERNOON

Supply chain, wood fuel and biofuels - Availability status and strategies to adapt to demand

This session aimed at providing inputs on supply and demand matching, in a context of growing demand for wood energy (with the development of wood heating district network and large scale cogeneration) and local wood fuel production, until now a significantly under-taped resource.

The current status and development potential for "traditional" biomass resources from forestry or industrial sources (logs, chips and pellets) have been assessed.

This has been followed by insights from industry and research on the potential and current challenges of new fuels, such as agricultural biofuels (dedicated energy crops and by-products) or short rotation coppices.
